Mirror, Mirror on the wall.... Who is the Fairest of them all? Embracing Positive Self-Image and Self-Worth in Islam
A common ailment in this day and age is our inability to permit ourselves to love ourselves. In this post, I will try to convince you why you should do so while delving into the importance of positive self-image and self-worth in Islam. This is your journey to free yourself and possess a healthy and confident mindset.
Let's take a moment to reflect on the following statements:
"I am too fat"
"I am too thin"
"I am not smart enough"
"I am too shy"
"I am too talkative"
"I am too active"
"I am too lazy"
Mirror Mirror on the Wall…I don’t Need you Anymore!
Two things are common in all of these statements: they reflect a negative self-image and they are driven by shame. Let's be honest, the majority of us fall into the trap of self-shaming and low self-esteem. But this should not be the case. Islam, as a way of life, teaches us self-acceptance and empowerment. Here are some steps to help you start loving yourself as you should:
1. Practice Gratitude:
Start by understanding yourself better. Embrace your imperfections as what makes you unique and defines who you are. Remember, societal pressures propagate unrealistic beauty standards that distort the true meaning of beauty. True beauty lies in faith, character, and righteous actions.
Imperfections are Beautiful
The Quran states in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), "But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter, and [yet], do not forget your share of the world."
Practice gratitude by looking in the mirror and appreciating your natural beauty as a gift from Allah. whether its your smile, your hijab or your features. Cultivate a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.
One daily exercise you can try is journaling. Dedicate a specific time, usually before you go to sleep, to express gratitude for yourself. Write down qualities you appreciate about yourself as a person, and jot down 3 to 5 blessings or positive experiences that happened during your day. Use words of encouragement to uplift yourself. Make this a daily habit.
2. Practice Self-Reflection:
Avoid comparing your story with others. You are writing your own unique story that is unlike any other. It describes your strengths, talents, and individual characteristics. Embrace your individuality with love, for Allah has purposefully created us different.
Write your Individual Story of Self-Love
The Quran states in Surat Ar-Rum (30:22), "And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed, in that are signs for those of knowledge."
Self reflect on the unrecognized skills that Allah has bestowed upon you. It could be your academic excellence, your artistic creativity or your ability to listen and observe. Reflect on these gifts from Allah and learn to develop a sense of self-worth and a positive self-image.
3. Practice Self-Care:
Maintaining a balance of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being is crucial. Remember, you are what you eat, so be conscious of what goes into your body.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep him going, but if he must fill his stomach, then one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for air." (Sunan Ibn Majah)
For Muslims, prayer is a time to recharge and replenish your energies. Approach prayer with a holistic mindset, letting go of negative thoughts and replacing them with peace and a renewed sense of energy to navigate life's challenges and fulfill your daily responsibilities. Acknowledge the closeness you feel to Allah and the guidance you feel through your prayer and acts of worship.
Rejuvenate the Soul with Salah
4. Do Not Seek External Validation:
To practice loving yourself, start by identifying the situations that trigger low self-esteem. Recognize and challenge them. In Islam, self-worth is not tied to external validation but rather to one's relationship with Allah and the efforts made for self-improvement.
The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you."
By striving for righteousness, seeking knowledge, and engaging in acts of worship, we enhance our self-worth and deepen our connection with our Creator.
5. Surround Yourself with the Right Company:
Surround yourself with people who appreciate you for who you are. Choose those who encourage your self-improvement and uplift your self-esteem. Surround yourself with individuals who never make you doubt yourself.
Surround Yourself with Your People
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "A person is likely to follow the faith of their friend, so be cautious about whom you befriend." (Sunan Abu Dawood)
Recognize the positive impact these relationships have on your self-image and be grateful for the love and support you receive from them.
In conclusion, loving yourself and embracing a positive self-image and self-worth is not only essential for your well-being but also aligns with the teachings of Islam. It is a journey of self-acceptance, empowerment, and connection with Allah.
